Vale Warren Schutz – a celebration of a life with Trakehners

With great sadness, Trakehners Australia Inc write this tribute to our President, Warren Schutz, who passed away unexpectedly on the afternoon of 17 February 2024.

Our heartfelt condolences to Warren’s partner Garry Campbell, and to all his family and friends.

Warren was a great horseman, breeder, trainer and rider, and a driving force in Trakehner breeding and promotion in Australia. He was also a great and trusted friend to many.

Warren was always a horseperson. His journey with Trakheners started with a mare named Fraggle, by Wesuw Imp and out of a stud book thoroughbred mare.

Gwarryen Trakehner Stud was established by Warren and Garry from a love of the breed, and a genuine passion for horses and horsemanship and Trakehners in particular. Warren and Garry (who is also an experienced and skilled horse person) worked as a wonderful team to breed, raise and produce the Gwarryen herd.

Warren’s excellent eye, bloodline knowledge and astute recognition of Trakehner type and quality came into play in finding and purchasing Australian bred and registered Trakehner mares from various breeders as the foundation for Gwarryen Trakehner Stud. Many of these mares were also graded and registered with the Trakehner Verband eV into their mare Studbook 1.

Warren has done so much for the Trakehner breed in Australia. He has forged and maintained connections with breeders and owner-riders in Australia, and has actively forged connections with breeders and stallion owners overseas. Some of Warren’s goals were the continued development of the breed in Australia as well as preserving the existing Trakehner bloodlines in Australia. Warren was diligent in always trying to source the best Trakehner stallions available for breeding for Australia, not just for himself but for all Australian Trakehner breeders. He has a loyal following of true friends, both in person and electronic. Warren was always available for advice or just general discussion about breeding and competing. His generosity with his time and resources was humbling.

Warren worked long and hard for the Gwarryen herd, and was unstinting in the assistance given to others, whether as breeding advice, handling or riding coaching or being a genuine friendly ear and voice to discuss all manner of things with.

Within Trakehners Australia Warren was, and will continue to be, revered for his knowledge and vision and assistance provided to all. Warren made a point of attending on-tour for the TA and TV gradings since 2019 when he came back onto the Committee as President after a time away from the Committee.

We offer our deepest sympathies to Warren’s partner Garry Campbell, and to Warren’s family and friends.

Warren, you are deeply missed and you live on in our hearts and minds and you leave a legacy of amazing Trakehner horses you and Garry have bred through your stud, Gwarryen Trakehners.
